![]() ![]() As Gilbert Briggs once sagely said, "the wider you open the window, the more muck blows in." Ironically it was the Melco which despite being the best file-based replay I'd heard, began to put me off the whole file-based thing. ![]() It tends to manifest as that digital 'glare.' Generally it's only when it's removed you become aware of it. The type of noise I'm referring to isn't a constant, rather it's present with, and can modulate the music signal. This was very apparent on the hall ambience and audience applause before anyone played a note on the first album I played on it. The first thing I noticed with the Melco compared to the Mac set-up I had was just the lowering of the noise floor. I've heard some of the Naim file/streamer doodads, but only in the type of system which tends not to engage me for very long, so difficult to comment meaningfully on absolute performance. So no, I don't think you'd need to re-rip – he says blithely, while knowing bugger all about the Naim.Īt worst you might have to convert files to a different format, but there are software utilities which can do that for you losslessly without the need to start again from ground zero. When I bought a Melco it could read my AIFF files from an external drive without issue.
